Can You Live in Your House During a Remodel? Here's How We Keep It Livable

August 26, 2026

You don't have to move out to remodel your kitchen or bathroom. Most of our clients in Berrien County live in their home the entire time we're working — they just need to know what to expect and how we keep the rest of the house livable while one part of it is torn apart. Here's how we plan for that on every remodel, and what we ask you to plan for on your end.

The First Question We Ask: What Do You Actually Need to Keep Using?

Before we schedule a single trade, we walk the house with you and figure out what has to stay functional. If it's a kitchen remodel, that usually means setting up a temporary cooking space — a folding table with a microwave, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker in the dining room or garage. If it's a bathroom remodel and you've only got one bath in the house, we talk through timing so you're never without a working toilet and shower overnight. None of this is complicated, but it has to be decided before demo day, not during it. We build it into the schedule up front so there are no surprises.

Dust Control Isn't an Afterthought — It's Part of the Plan

Construction dust travels farther than people expect, especially during demo and drywall work. On every remodel where the homeowners are staying in the house, we hang plastic sheeting with zippered doorways to seal off the work area, run the job with the HVAC return in that zone temporarily blocked or filtered, and tape off vents so dust doesn't get pulled through the ductwork and redistributed to bedrooms on the other side of the house. We also run air scrubbers on jobs with heavy demo — old plaster, tile, or cabinetry removal kicks up more dust than most people expect. It's not glamorous work, but it's the difference between a remodel that stays contained and one that leaves dust on your dining room table for six weeks.

A Clean Job Site Is a Safety Issue, Not Just a Tidiness One

We run organized job sites because a cluttered one is where people get hurt — and where a project loses time. Our crews sweep and stage materials at the end of each day, keep walkways clear, and bag debris rather than letting it pile up. If you've got kids or pets in the house, we'll talk through which doors get temporary latches or barriers and where tools and materials get locked up overnight. You should never be stepping over exposed nails or a stack of tile boxes to get to the coffee maker in the morning. That's on us to prevent, not on you to work around.

Staged Schedules Keep the Disruption Predictable

The other piece that makes living through a remodel manageable is knowing what's coming. Bathroom remodels typically run 4 to 8 weeks depending on scope, and kitchen remodels typically run 8 to 14 weeks once demo begins — the range depends mostly on cabinetry lead times and how many selections are locked in before we start. We give you a phase-by-phase schedule so you know which week is demo, which week is rough plumbing and electrical, which week the water's shut off for a few hours versus a full day, and which week things get quieter while cabinets or countertops are on order. Nobody likes surprises when it's their only kitchen. A schedule you can actually plan your life around is part of what "one point of contact from start to finish" means to us — you call Mike, not four different subcontractors, when something needs to move.

What We Ask From You

Living through a remodel goes smoothest when a few things are settled before we start: selections made early (tile, fixtures, cabinet style and finish) so we're not waiting on a decision mid-project, a realistic conversation about noise and access for the weeks that are loudest, and a plan for pets or kids during the days the work area truly isn't safe to enter. We'll walk you through all of it before the first hammer swings, and we'll check in with you throughout so the plan adjusts if something comes up — because something always does on a remodel, and how it's handled matters more than pretending it won't.

If you're planning a kitchen or bathroom remodel in Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Stevensville, Bridgman, New Buffalo, Three Oaks, Sawyer, or Niles and want to know what living through it will actually look like in your house, we'll walk the space with you and lay out an honest schedule before any work starts. Schedule a no-obligation consultation with Mike and his team and get a straight answer on timeline, staging, and what to expect week by week.
